Rating: Not Rated Director: F.W. Murnau I have mixed emotions about this film. I think the music/ score was really fitting in every scene. Not only did it follow the scenes well but it sounded like one continuous play of the instruments and was very smooth. The score especially did exceptional in the introduction and allowed the viewers to truly fear what was about to come. I appreciated that the title cards were in English, unlike the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, because I was really able to focus in and understand what was going on, especially without sound. Obviously there is no color to comment on but it was very hard to tell when it was night. There was one scene where the main character was meeting up with the guy who he was supposed to sell the house to and it was supposedly midnight (as listed in the title card). However watching that scene without seeing the title card first I thought it was 2 in the afternoon because of bright it was. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari did a lot better job of portraying when it was night compared to Nosferatu. I think the actors did a pretty good job as well. They portrayed their fear over the top but it allows viewers to know that Nosferatu is about to come around and do something horrific. I definitely wouldn’t watch another movie like this but it gives me a chance to watch old films and see where the art of movie making started from. The guy who plays the vampire is very creepy and genuinely looks like a vampire. It was definitely an experience watching this movie and seeing early film, but not my cup of tea at all. Rating: PG-13 Director: Neil Burger This movie is both a mix of uplifting and sad. It’s a true story about a quadriplegic millionaire Philippe Pozzo di Borge (Phillip) and his aid Abdel Sellou (Dell). I watched the trailer for it and I wasn’t sure how I was going to like it but I’m really glad I stuck with watching it. It starts off a little slow but eventually picks up and is a great movie overall. I don’t think I have ever seen a movie Kevin Hart starred in that I didn’t like and this is one I’m adding to my list as well. He is such a great actor and it was great seeing him in this role because it wasn’t all based on comedy. Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman are excellent in this movie as well. Cranston does a great job portraying a paraplegic and truly made it feel like I was watching the story unfold in front of me. I really loved seeing how Dell comes from a difficult life with just trying to find work after getting out of jail. He’s not necessarily doing it for him but his son who has never really seen him as a dad because of how unreliable he is. Phillip has his struggles as well despite being a millionaire. He lost his wife to cancer and is paralyzed from a hang gliding accident and he doesn’t see a reason to live anymore. He automatically tells Dell on his first day about the DNR and how he doesn’t ever want extreme measures to be taken. I loved how when first walking into the penthouse to just get a paper signed for a janitorial job, Dell finds a ceramic bull in Phillips office. Later on in the movie after Dell and Phillip have a bond, Dell ends up smashing the bull and other things to help release Phillips anger, which I thought was cool that they made the bull a symbol for their friendship. It was amazing to see their two completely different lifestyles and struggles unfold as they connect and build a great bond together. This movie is very sad but there is a decent amount of comedy in it. I’m extremely happy that I watched this movie because it’s not necessarily something I would pick, but I found myself to enjoy it. I would definitely recommend this movie, especially for someone looking for a heartwarming piece that’s not always serious and is truly enjoying to watch. Trailer: youtu.be/Dt1EEV-Szu4 Rating: Pg-13
Director: Damien Chazelle One word to describe this movie: BEAUTIFUL. It catches my attention from the very first scene. The colors are fantastic and the whole choreography is amazing. They did an excellent job of making sure everyone was in sync and the song in general is really good and very upbeat. Despite all the bright colors and wonderful dancing, I was actually concerned at first about how this plot would play out because it had a slow start. I am very glad that I stuck with it and finished the movie. I love how the colors blue, red and yellow are very prominent and are seen throughout the entire film. Seeing all the dresses in these colors and more, it helps add to the color scheme, which is amazing. Not only do the colors in the film satisfy me, but the music does too. The first song “Another Day of Sun” (which I recommend listening to) is what all the other songs are based off of. Every other song in the movie has some part of the song's chorus inside of it. For example, when Mia is singing with her friends “Someone in the Crowd” you can hear the chorus and melody of “Another Day of Sun.” I think the whole aspect of that is creative and connects the different parts of the movie. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone really add to the movie. The movie is interesting in the first place, but when they are the actors, it becomes 1000% better. They seriously did an amazing job and I can’t envision anyone else being the stars of this movie. It was also a wonderful surprise to have John Legend in it. I was worried at first because I wasn’t sure what he knew about acting, but he blew me away and portrayed his character perfectly. Having him play the star of a jazz band fits perfectly. When Mr. Murray showed the first scene of it in film class my sophomore year I wanted to see it, but never really found the time and didn’t want to have to buy it. I’m really glad that its on Hulu now because I can watch it over and over and over. I absolutely love this movie and it is now one of those that I wish I could experience for the first time again. I love Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone acting together and I was upset when they didn’t end up together, but I realized that this movie is about their lives and how their love helped each other get where they needed to be, but they weren’t endgame. The songs, color scheme, acting, choreography, just everything about this movie is amazing and it might be one of my favorites now. Thanks Hailey for pushing and bothering me to watch this because now I understand the beauty of this film and can appreciate “Mia and Sebastian’s Theme” with you. I tear up everytime hearing that melody because it reminds me of how great they helped each other become. Trailer: youtu.be/0pdqf4P9MB8 Rating: TV-14
Director: Mark Waters I did not enjoy this movie at all. The only reason I enjoyed it was for the actor Tanner Buchanon who has acted in Cobra Kai and did exceptionally well in this movie. The plot of this movie is supposed to be a spinoff of the 1999 movie She’s All That except it is an unpopular boy being changed into a prom king instead of a girl. The idea of the plot is an interesting idea but the acting ruins it. Addison Rae, the main actress, is the worst actress I have ever seen. In one scene where she’s supposed to be upset for someone she doesn’t speak with any sympathy at all. Quite honestly, the whole movie is ruined because of her. Yes, this is a very cheesy movie but it could have been better without her. The whole time I laughed at how awful her acting is compared to everyone else’s. She needs to stay with making Tik Toks instead of trying to be a singer/actress. Kourtney Kardashian is also in it and I feel like that was unnecessary. They have enough publicity as it is, she doesn’t need to be acting in movies. There are 2 other actors in it that I recognized and they were both in Disney films. Peyton Meyer from Girl Meets World and Madison Pettis from Cory in the House and The Game Plan. They weren’t terrible actors, but they’re definitely not the best. I think this movie overall tried too hard to please younger viewers with their cast instead of focusing on what actors could make the movie actually good. I would only recommend people watch this movie to see how terrible the acting is and how badly it tries to be a great movie, but isn’t. Trailer: https://youtu.be/XqTPaRz8Nx8 |
