Rating: PG Director: Garth Jennings I saw this in the theater with my little cousins and sister. I saw the first movie in theatres as a New Year's Day movie with my family soon after it came out. I personally liked the first one because it was lighthearted and was just a cool idea to watch. When I saw the second one’s trailer, I was nervous about it because the trailer was 4 minutes long and was all over the place. Through the trailer, I felt like I had already seen the whole movie. However, I was not disappointed when I actually saw the movie. I’m a big music person and enjoy listening to music on a daily basis. The music soundtrack in this movie was very enjoyable and I was singing along to every song. I actually liked this better than the first one because I feel like it had more of a story. Another thing I enjoyed about this movie was the cast. Halsey, Scarlett Johanson, Tori Kelly, Pharrell Williams, Matthew McConaughey, Bono and Reese Witherspoon is an excellent cast that helps make this movie enjoyable. It was super cool to have Mr. Calloway voiced by Bono because it allowed adults to relate to not having seen him tour or sing in a while. I think the story of trying to become international superstars had more of a story but it was cool to see how each character overcame something that prevented them from their full potential from the beginning and sang songs that portrayed them fighting back. Overall I enjoyed Sing 2 better than the first one and it was very enjoyable to watch and listen to. Trailer: youtu.be/EPZu5MA2uqI

Rating: PG-13 Director: Rob Reiner This movie is definitely a tear jerker. Everyone in my family has always talked about how much they’ve enjoyed this movie whenever they watch it and I’ve never brought myself around to see it. However when I found out Rob Reiner was the director of the movie, I knew this would be the perfect opportunity to see it for the first time. I knew it was going to be sad considering it’s called the bucket list (and also the fact that everyone in my family told me I would cry) but I had no idea that I would laugh as well. Any movie that Morgan Freeman is in, I’ve enjoyed. I don’t think he’s starred in a bad movie and I personally love him as an actor. He always does a great job and adds so much personality and fun to every character he portrays. I don’t believe I have ever seen any movies that Jack Nicholson has starred in besides this one but from what I saw, he was pretty good. I felt like Morgan Freeman and him worked great together and made the story come alive. It’s not an action or thriller movie by any means but it’s certainly one that everyone should see before they die. I think it definitely gives perspective on life and how you live it. I was laughing during this movie for the most part but once the end hit, I was very sad. I think the movie has the absolute perfect ending but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t sad. I think this movie had me question a lot about what could happen and I didn’t know how it was going to end after a while. Multiple times I thought I knew what would happen and then something else completely different happened. Yes this movie is sad but really not up until the very end. It is very funny and helps you look back on your own life and how you’ve lived it or even acted around those you love. I genuinely enjoyed this movie a lot and the fact that it had me in tears for laughing and crying means that it did a perfect job of exceeding my expectations and helped me enjoy it to the fullest Trailer: youtu.be/vc3mkG21ob4 Rating: PG-13 Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber Ok, yes this is another Netflix film, but there is nothing wrong with watching good movies. This was a very good movie. I always enjoy watching Dwayne Johnson on screen, but I have never seen Ryan Reynolds as much. I specifically enjoyed his character the most. He played the part extremely well and provided the best comedy. Even if the comedy was childish or kinda stupid, I thought Ryan Reynolds did a great job and was laughing at everything that came out of his mouth. He and Dwayne Johnson act so well together and this movie was really good. My mom watched it before me and told me it was like an Indiana Jones and The Mummy all pulled together. I was skeptical to watch because I don’t like the parts of Indiana Jones movies I have seen and have not seen The Mummy, so I wasn’t sure how I was going to like it. However after seeing Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds in it, I thought I would give it a try. This movie is definitely one of my favorites. It combines action with a little bit of comedy which I heavily enjoyed. Gal Gadot is an amazing actress. She completely became her character and totally showed how fierce she is. I loved how she beat up Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson every time their characters had to go against each other. I really thought I knew how this movie would end up, but I was completely wrong. This movie definitely had a twist, but it wasn’t always hidden. There were tons of clues giving away the twist, that I just completely missed, but I’m glad I did because I hate knowing the ending or shocking part of the movie. Overall, this movie was very good and is super entertaining the whole time. The casting, acting and plot totally make this movie worth watching because it was excellent Trailer: youtu.be/Pj0wz7zu3Ms Rating: R Director: Phil Lord I watched this with my sister and it was hilarious. I’ve heard so many things about this movie and tons of people have seen it so I thought I should watch it. I genuinely enjoyed this movie. I was laughing every 10 seconds with my sister and it was so stupid that it was funny. I enjoyed Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill together because their complete opposite personalities allow this movie to be as hilariously stupid as it is. I think this idea was pretty creative and the cast fit so well. I also thought what added to the comedy was how the jock looking man fit in with the nerds and the nerd was grouped with the “cool” kids. Also the way “cool” kids are portrayed differently than other movies was pretty cool. During the chase scene the Wilhelm scream was totally unnecessary but totally suits the mood of the movie. The things that are said in this movie seriously are entertaining and I’m glad I could watch this comedic film with my sister. I should watch more Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum movies. They might not be well known actors but they are hilarious and I enjoyed my time when watching this movie. I will definitely be watching the second one. Also just found out today during class that 21 Jump Street was based off of a TV show that starred Johnny Depp, who appeared near the end of the movie, which is extremely cool. Rating: R Director: Brian De Palma This movie was wack! I have heard so many people talk about it and I wanted to watch a movie many have seen before. I used to watch the show Riverdale and one of their musical episodes was their performance of Carrie, but of course with their own twist. I knew it had something to do with a girl made fun of and then later had pigs blood poured on her, but I had no idea it was so extreme. The girls are so mean to her just because her mother is crazy and won’t tell Carrie anything about living as a teenager. Carrie is so innocent and no one realizes she has so much power within her to cause destruction. I hated the way she was treated by both her mother and the girls at school. I liked that there was 1 girl in her school who looked out for her and she allowed her boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom instead of herself. At first I thought Tommy was rude and doing it as a joke, but after the movie finished I truly believe he was trying to be nice. My mom warned me it was a crazy movie to see and she was 100% right. The whole act of pouring pigs blood on someone is just despicable and it was awful to watch. They all got what was coming to them, but I don’t think Tommy deserved to die with everyone else, but Carrie was so messed up at that point that she couldn’t hold in her power anymore. I did not like how she just casually walked away from everyone in the building on fire because it was just terrifying to see her be so calm when she is killing her entire school. I also can’t believe her mom was willing to kill her. Carrie’s power eventually took over when she was trying to defend herself from being brutally murdered by her mom, but she still blamed herself for killing her mom. I absolutely despised Carrie’s mom as well as Billy and Chris. Her mom was actually a psychopath and I just cannot believe someone would treat their child like a demon. I don’t think I will ever watch this again, but it was an experience for sure. Rating: R Director: Drew Goddard I enjoyed this movie a lot. It’s definitely out of my comfort zone because I hate horror movies. I just don't enjoy scary movies because it's not my cup of tea. However this weekend since it was Halloween, I wanted to watch something that put me in the spirit. I watched it with my mom and sister who also don’t enjoy horror movies but it was actually pretty funny. It's definitely intense for the most part, but left us laughing more than quite a few times. The actors Chris Hemsworth and Jesse Williams were really good and it was unusual to see them in a movie like this. I’m used to Hemsworth as Thor and I’ve seen Williams star in Grey’s Anatomy, so I quite enjoyed them out of their usual careers. They provided great comedic relief because it's a bunch of naive teenagers at a cabin with a dead family trying to kill them. The storyline was definitely interesting but also a little confusing at times. I was unsure about what the people watching them were doing but eventually figured out that they’re trying to please some god. This movie defied my expectations but in a good way. It added more to the story than I was expecting and kept me on my toes because I was so interested in what was the ultimate goal. I liked the whole movie up until the ending. It feels too easy. It ends in a way that doesn’t really have a finish to the story. I sat through the whole movie just for everyone to die and that just doesn’t seem like it should’ve ended that way. I enjoyed the acting and intense scares and am glad to have gone out of my comfort zone to watch it. Trailer: youtu.be/NsIilFNNmkY Rating: PG-13
Director: Zach Braff This movie is comedic but heartwarming at the same time. The story is creative and isn’t a common everyday movie story. I was sitting down with my mom looking for a movie to watch and we came across this and I enjoyed it a lot. I got a lot of good laughs but there were some moments where I was sad and felt truly heartbroken for the old men. Hearing that their pension would be taken away made me very upset, especially since it does happen in real life too. However, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin are hilarious. There are no other old men actors that could have portrayed these parts any better. Each actor made their character have a connection with the viewer through seeing their family and lifestyle. They are comedic in general, but their interactions when they’re with each other made me laugh so hard. I really enjoyed watching this movie because it's a cute, simple movie that is just impossible to not like. The actors, plot, comedy and overall general movie was really enjoyable and my mom and I had a good time watching it. It was good to see a movie that is not something I would generally pick but was creative in its plot. I think it's a great story and full of laughs for sure. Trailer: youtu.be/hcdTN5soeQw Rating: R Director: Jay Roach This movie was at times hard to watch, but overall was very eye opening. I remember hearing about this movie in Mr. Murrays film class when he would show us trailers of movies that would be coming out. I totally forgot about it, until I was searching on Hulu for some of those must watch movies. I came across it and I remembered the name but wasn't super excited about seeing it at first. However, I am really glad that I stuck to it and watched it all. It starts off a little slow but picks up and is very interesting. Some of the content in this movie is uncomfortable since it revolves around sexual harassment, but it was amazing to see how one woman in the Fox news workplace was able to get Roger Ailes to basically be forced to resign from Fox. It was disgusting to hear about what he would make women do to allow them to be on screen and was very sad to see these women cave in just to be able to be seen on TV. I had never heard about this specific story until I saw the trailer in Murray’s class, but it was definitely eye opening. Not only was the story about three different women’s experiences at Fox interesting, but the actresses who played the women were spectacular. I know of Margot Robbie from Suicide Squad and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and I think she is an amazing actress who can portray anyone she wants instead of having one specific character she is always assigned. I have heard of Charlize Theron but had never actually seen her movies and she is absolutely spectacular. I read more on the situation the movie covered and so many people couldn’t even tell they weren’t actually watching Megyn Kelly because of how talented she is that she made it seem real. I also have never seen Nicole Kidman act, but she did a great job as well. All three of the actresses who were portraying someone particular did a phenomenal job and I felt like I was watching the true story about Roger Ailes and the women who tried to take him down. It was just totally not something I would originally pick out and watch for myself, but the way it was laid out was different from a normal movie because there were parts where the actors would be talking to you about something in the news career and then would go on to portraying their character. I really enjoyed this movie and it was absolutely amazing to know and see the three women who have really made an impact on women in the news industry today and give them faith that they don’t have to take the terrible treatment they receive. It is a good movie but is hard to take in because of how real it is when portraying women in the workplace. Trailer: youtu.be/B2G9-KhBek8 Rating: R Directors: John Landis, Craig Brewer I love this storyline. I think it's a common idea of moving away to find someone to love and not be told who to marry, but this movie is an excellent overall movie. Eddie Murphy is fantastic and he’s funny in every movie he does but as Akeem he does a great job. I think its hilarious that he wants to escape the rich lifestyle to find someone who loves him for him while his best friend Semmi uses his money to find girls in America. I love Akeem’s genuine heart and when I thought they weren’t going to end up together I was devastated. The whole idea of Lisa not liking that he hid his royalty from her but realizing how genuine he is was adorable to watch. I think James Earl Jones is a great actor but I hate his character in this movie. I know he just wants Akeem to always listen to him but he is not a very nice person, but I think the mom is fantastic and does a great job of getting the dad on board for Akeem’s wishes. I have seen this once before but it was a while ago and I’m glad I watched it again. It has great humor and the costume detailing is eye-catching and wonderful to look at. I appreciate Akeem wanting to find his own love and not be caught up in his richness like most people would do. I also love how excited he is to basically be living poor and working in the fast food industry taking care of garbage. His optimism and effort to fit in is very amusing and adds more to the story than him just trying to find love. I also appreciated the fact that Eddie Murphy plays like 6 other characters in the story. You can tell it's him but you also can’t because the makeup is actually really really good. Overall I enjoyed this movie a lot and appreciated a little spin off of the traditional storyline that is used quite often. I’m glad my dad and I watched this again after a while and I got to see one of his favorite movies with him. Rating: Not Rated Director: Julio Quintana When I was scrolling through Netflix trying to find something to watch, I came across this and saw Dennis Quaid was in it, so it grabbed my attention and I just decided to press play. I’m so glad I did because I think this might be one of my favorite movies!!! It was truly EXCEPTIONAL. It's based on a true story that I have never heard of before. It is about a husband and wife that have to save their orphanage which requires Omar and 3 of his kids to enter into a prestigious fishing tournament with a washed up boat captain. It's definitely not something I would find myself enjoying because I think fishing can be boring, but this movie is downright amazing. I seriously would watch it over and over and over again. The story is inspiring but the acting and cinematography are brilliant. One of the shots that will stay in my mind is a shot of the water that is beautiful and some of the best color I have seen. The way they show the flashbacks of Omar when he was younger is also really cool. Everything about this movie is fantastic. I didn't find anything wrong with it and it's very entertaining. I’m definitely going to have to read about the actual story and see how it lines up but I think this movie did a great job portraying the whole story. It was great to see how this orphanage started from nothing and was able to be built into something great to help so many kids. The connection that Omar has with all the kids in the orphanage and the connection with a kid he makes along the way is wonderful to watch. Dennis Quaid is always enjoyable to watch and he makes this movie pretty funny, but the main actor Jimmy Gonzales is phenomenal and I felt like I was feeling everything he was in the scenes he was in. I will definitely be adding this to my list of favorite movies. Trailer: youtu.be/pXHCBnT3d4k Rating: Not Rated Director: F.W. Murnau I have mixed emotions about this film. I think the music/ score was really fitting in every scene. Not only did it follow the scenes well but it sounded like one continuous play of the instruments and was very smooth. The score especially did exceptional in the introduction and allowed the viewers to truly fear what was about to come. I appreciated that the title cards were in English, unlike the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, because I was really able to focus in and understand what was going on, especially without sound. Obviously there is no color to comment on but it was very hard to tell when it was night. There was one scene where the main character was meeting up with the guy who he was supposed to sell the house to and it was supposedly midnight (as listed in the title card). However watching that scene without seeing the title card first I thought it was 2 in the afternoon because of bright it was. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari did a lot better job of portraying when it was night compared to Nosferatu. I think the actors did a pretty good job as well. They portrayed their fear over the top but it allows viewers to know that Nosferatu is about to come around and do something horrific. I definitely wouldn’t watch another movie like this but it gives me a chance to watch old films and see where the art of movie making started from. The guy who plays the vampire is very creepy and genuinely looks like a vampire. It was definitely an experience watching this movie and seeing early film, but not my cup of tea at all. Trailer: youtu.be/ZxlJxDr26mM Rating: PG-13 Director: Neil Burger This movie is both a mix of uplifting and sad. It’s a true story about a quadriplegic millionaire Philippe Pozzo di Borge (Phillip) and his aid Abdel Sellou (Dell). I watched the trailer for it and I wasn’t sure how I was going to like it but I’m really glad I stuck with watching it. It starts off a little slow but eventually picks up and is a great movie overall. I don’t think I have ever seen a movie Kevin Hart starred in that I didn’t like and this is one I’m adding to my list as well. He is such a great actor and it was great seeing him in this role because it wasn’t all based on comedy. Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman are excellent in this movie as well. Cranston does a great job portraying a paraplegic and truly made it feel like I was watching the story unfold in front of me. I really loved seeing how Dell comes from a difficult life with just trying to find work after getting out of jail. He’s not necessarily doing it for him but his son who has never really seen him as a dad because of how unreliable he is. Phillip has his struggles as well despite being a millionaire. He lost his wife to cancer and is paralyzed from a hang gliding accident and he doesn’t see a reason to live anymore. He automatically tells Dell on his first day about the DNR and how he doesn’t ever want extreme measures to be taken. I loved how when first walking into the penthouse to just get a paper signed for a janitorial job, Dell finds a ceramic bull in Phillips office. Later on in the movie after Dell and Phillip have a bond, Dell ends up smashing the bull and other things to help release Phillips anger, which I thought was cool that they made the bull a symbol for their friendship. It was amazing to see their two completely different lifestyles and struggles unfold as they connect and build a great bond together. This movie is very sad but there is a decent amount of comedy in it. I’m extremely happy that I watched this movie because it’s not necessarily something I would pick, but I found myself to enjoy it. I would definitely recommend this movie, especially for someone looking for a heartwarming piece that’s not always serious and is truly enjoying to watch. Trailer: youtu.be/Dt1EEV-Szu4 Rating: Pg-13
Director: Damien Chazelle One word to describe this movie: BEAUTIFUL. It catches my attention from the very first scene. The colors are fantastic and the whole choreography is amazing. They did an excellent job of making sure everyone was in sync and the song in general is really good and very upbeat. Despite all the bright colors and wonderful dancing, I was actually concerned at first about how this plot would play out because it had a slow start. I am very glad that I stuck with it and finished the movie. I love how the colors blue, red and yellow are very prominent and are seen throughout the entire film. Seeing all the dresses in these colors and more, it helps add to the color scheme, which is amazing. Not only do the colors in the film satisfy me, but the music does too. The first song “Another Day of Sun” (which I recommend listening to) is what all the other songs are based off of. Every other song in the movie has some part of the song's chorus inside of it. For example, when Mia is singing with her friends “Someone in the Crowd” you can hear the chorus and melody of “Another Day of Sun.” I think the whole aspect of that is creative and connects the different parts of the movie. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone really add to the movie. The movie is interesting in the first place, but when they are the actors, it becomes 1000% better. They seriously did an amazing job and I can’t envision anyone else being the stars of this movie. It was also a wonderful surprise to have John Legend in it. I was worried at first because I wasn’t sure what he knew about acting, but he blew me away and portrayed his character perfectly. Having him play the star of a jazz band fits perfectly. When Mr. Murray showed the first scene of it in film class my sophomore year I wanted to see it, but never really found the time and didn’t want to have to buy it. I’m really glad that its on Hulu now because I can watch it over and over and over. I absolutely love this movie and it is now one of those that I wish I could experience for the first time again. I love Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone acting together and I was upset when they didn’t end up together, but I realized that this movie is about their lives and how their love helped each other get where they needed to be, but they weren’t endgame. The songs, color scheme, acting, choreography, just everything about this movie is amazing and it might be one of my favorites now. Thanks Hailey for pushing and bothering me to watch this because now I understand the beauty of this film and can appreciate “Mia and Sebastian’s Theme” with you. I tear up everytime hearing that melody because it reminds me of how great they helped each other become. Trailer: youtu.be/0pdqf4P9MB8 Rating: TV-14
Director: Mark Waters I did not enjoy this movie at all. The only reason I enjoyed it was for the actor Tanner Buchanon who has acted in Cobra Kai and did exceptionally well in this movie. The plot of this movie is supposed to be a spinoff of the 1999 movie She’s All That except it is an unpopular boy being changed into a prom king instead of a girl. The idea of the plot is an interesting idea but the acting ruins it. Addison Rae, the main actress, is the worst actress I have ever seen. In one scene where she’s supposed to be upset for someone she doesn’t speak with any sympathy at all. Quite honestly, the whole movie is ruined because of her. Yes, this is a very cheesy movie but it could have been better without her. The whole time I laughed at how awful her acting is compared to everyone else’s. She needs to stay with making Tik Toks instead of trying to be a singer/actress. Kourtney Kardashian is also in it and I feel like that was unnecessary. They have enough publicity as it is, she doesn’t need to be acting in movies. There are 2 other actors in it that I recognized and they were both in Disney films. Peyton Meyer from Girl Meets World and Madison Pettis from Cory in the House and The Game Plan. They weren’t terrible actors, but they’re definitely not the best. I think this movie overall tried too hard to please younger viewers with their cast instead of focusing on what actors could make the movie actually good. I would only recommend people watch this movie to see how terrible the acting is and how badly it tries to be a great movie, but isn’t. Trailer: https://youtu.be/XqTPaRz8Nx8 Rating: PG-13 Director: Robert Luketic I enjoyed watching this movie. It is a movie that most everyone has seen so I decided that I needed to watch it and I’m glad I did. It was really funny but also had elements that relate to the real world. I appreciated the fact that they portrayed a strong female lead. She starts out by being stereotyped because of the color of her hair and ends up proving herself. As a blonde haired girl I know her struggle of being thought of as a “dumb blonde.” This movie is a great portrayal of female power. She pawns after a guy but proves herself in a male dominated field and shows how looks aren’t everything when it comes to intelligence. This movie also has a great color scheme with all the bright colors inside of it. There’s lots of pink but even in the Ivy League school environment with bland colors, they still incorporated a loud color scheme which drew lots of attention. Reese Witherspoon was excellent in this movie. She would go from crying to smiling in only a small amount of time. She is a wonderful actress and really helps this movie be amazing. I love the overall theme of how intelligence doesn’t have one specific look. Intelligence can be anyone and you shouldn’t ever give up because people doubt you. This movie also discusses the realness behind everyday jobs. The lawyer for the girl Elle worked for had one of the other girls bring him his coffee and never cared about what she had to say. This movie allowed Elle to stand up for women in the attorney field. It had comedic effect behind serious topics of the real world such as sexual harassment, like Elle experienced from her boss. I just really appreciated the portrayal of women in this movie, specifically at the end when Elle gives the honorary speech at the graduation ceremony. It was also cool to see how a murder case is taken care of. I know it’s not exactly true but for the most part it allowed me to get a feel for what goes into being a lawyer. This movie was fantastic and I enjoyed it a lot but it’s definitely not for everyone. It has both a realistic and fictional feel to it which is nice to have. Movie Trailer: youtu.be/Phm3lpdR3_g |
