Rating: PG-13 Director: Jonas Poher Rasmussen This film was different from any kind of movie I’ve ever seen, especially animated ones. I originally had the English dub on, but I changed it within the first 5 minutes because I wanted to see it as the director intended. I wasn’t sure how I was going to like it, but it was pretty good. I was confused at some parts from how they stepped away from the interview and was in present time but I was still able to understand the point he was trying to get across. I knew it had to have been something about fleeing a country, but I had no idea the impact it would have on me. I was somehow hoping they would show pictures of the family at the end, just so I can put faces to a story, but I totally understand why they needed to protect their identities. I liked how at the end it was not animated and it was the real world because it makes the story so much more to connect with. The story overall was really good and it was hard at times to think about but it's definitely something that needs to be told. I’m not sure it will win because of all the other movies in that category however it was overall a good story. I wasn’t crazy about the animation because at times it would just feel like black and white lines but I think the bad animation made the story so much more important. Good animation would have drawn focus away from the story, so I understand why they spent more time with the story and less with the drawings. It’s very different from my idea of an animated film, but I was glad to step out of my comfort zone starting with a foreign film but also with a hand drawn animation style. It didn't feel like a movie and gave off more of a short film vibe. Overall I’m glad I watched this movie because it's important to see and is something very different from my everyday idea of a good movie. Trailer: youtu.be/2aRfHsMgfdg
